The Stefanatos family name originated on the island of Kefalonia, which is located to the west of Greece in the Ionian Sea.

Little detail is known of the Stefanatos name (it's meaning) except that it was a family name concentrated around the village of Sami.

Spiros' grandfather was the local village Priest. His father, Ioanis and mother Athanasia had 9 children of which Spiros was the eldest having 5 brothers, Dennis, Nick, Peter, Paul, & Chris and 3 sisters, Georgina, Maria and Helen.

Spiro was in the Greek army during the Second World War. He was a prisoner of war, confined by the Germans in Italy & France, where the young ladies taught him each langange. From 1942-1945. In 1949, he married Anastasia (Tasia) Dounis, the oldest daughter of the village chief from Molicrio.
